Cursor at $4B, Lovable at $400M: What the Build Tool Boom Actually Means for You

The Vibepreneur Team6 min read

The vibe coding market reached an estimated $4.7 billion in 2026, growing around 38% annually, with AI-generated code now making up roughly 41% of all code written globally. Cursor leads on revenue among dedicated platforms at an estimated $4 billion annualised by May 2026, having passed $2 billion in February. Lovable reached $400 million in the same month. GitHub Copilot holds the largest share at 42% with 4.7 million paid subscribers.

Those numbers get quoted constantly. The one that matters more is buried in Lovable's disclosures: 100,000 new projects created every day, with the vast majority of users not being software engineers.

The composition of the users is the story

A market growing this fast made up mostly of non-engineers is not a developer tools market. It is something else, and the category name has not caught up.

What it actually represents is the collapse of the build step as a barrier. For thirty years the constraint on turning domain knowledge into software was access to engineering capacity. That constraint is largely gone for the class of product most domain experts would build: a focused vertical tool with a clear data model and a handful of screens.

What the constraint became instead

When building stops being the bottleneck, the bottleneck moves to knowing what to build. This is not a comforting reframe. It is a genuinely harder problem, and it is why most of the 100,000 daily projects go nowhere.

None of these products created demand. They released demand that was already there. That is the shape of opportunity available to a domain expert right now.

The projects that go somewhere are started by people who already knew a specific workflow was broken before they opened the tool. The projects that stall are started by people who opened the tool first and went looking for a problem afterward. Same tool, opposite outcome, and the difference has nothing to do with technical skill.

The Base44 data point

None of these products created demand.

Base44 reached $1 million in annual recurring revenue three weeks after launch, and by June 2026 Wix had acquired it for $80 million in cash. Replit's revenue moved from $24 million to $240 million after launching its agent, and it is publicly targeting $1 billion by the end of 2026.

The lesson people take from this is usually about speed. The more useful lesson is about what those products did: they removed a specific friction for a specific group of people who were already trying to do the thing. None of them created demand. They released demand that was already there.

That is the shape of opportunity available to a domain expert right now. Not creating a market, releasing one.

How to use these tools well

The distinction that matters is between disposable and durable output. A prototype you will throw away next month should be built as fast as possible with no regard for structure. A product you intend to still be running in two years needs a data model somebody thought about.

Most founders get this wrong in one direction or the other. They either over-engineer a prototype that never finds a user, or they build a durable-looking product on a data model that has to be rebuilt at the first real customer. Deciding which one you are making, before you start, avoids both.

The part these tools do not do

They do not tell you which workflow matters, who pays for it, what to charge, or how anyone finds out the product exists. Those four things are the actual work of building a venture and none of them got cheaper.

This is why our launch builder generates prompts from your venture context rather than from a blank page. The prompt quality is entirely determined by the specificity behind it. See also why generic AI build prompts fail.
