How to Find a Vertical Worth Building In

The Vibepreneur Team6 min read

Vertical SaaS for ignored industries is consistently first on the list of micro-SaaS categories growing fastest. The word doing the work in that phrase is ignored, and it has specific, identifiable characteristics.

An ignored industry is not one nobody has heard of. It is one where the software that exists was built for a different size of company, a different decade, or a different country, and everybody in the industry has quietly adapted around it.

The five markers

Spreadsheets in production. Not for analysis, for operations. When a spreadsheet is the system of record for something that affects revenue, and one person maintains it, that is the clearest available signal.

Software that predates the current decade. If the dominant vendor's interface looks like it does, the industry has been served by inertia rather than competition, and switching costs are the only thing holding it.

A trade press that discusses process problems. Industries with active trade publications complaining about the same operational issues year after year are describing an unserved market in public.

High staff mobility. When people move between employers frequently, tools travel with them and word of mouth works, which solves the hardest problem a small vendor has.

Quantifiable losses. The industry already measures something in money that your product would improve. If they measure it, they can be sold to.

Ask five people who do the job what they cannot believe they still do manually. If three name the same thing, you have found a market.

Where these industries cluster

Look at the ones that did not attract venture funding, because funding follows perceived market size and perceived market size follows visibility. Construction subcontracting, independent retail, vocational training, freight procurement, commercial property management, contract manufacturing, independent media distribution.

Each of those is large, operationally complex, and served mostly by either enterprise software priced out of reach or nothing at all. That is not an accident and it is not going to correct quickly.

Find five people who do the job and ask them one question: what do you do that you cannot believe you still do manually.

The answers are remarkably consistent within an industry and remarkably surprising to outsiders. If three of five name the same thing, you have found a market without any desk research at all.

The disqualifiers

Some ignored industries are ignored for good reasons. Extremely long sales cycles driven by public procurement. Buyers who genuinely cannot pay, as opposed to buyers who are simply careful. Regulatory barriers that require certification you cannot obtain. Markets small enough that the total addressable revenue is under a few million.

Check for those before committing, because each of them can absorb a year before becoming obvious.

The advantage you need

None of this works without a reason for you specifically to be the one. The industry knowledge is not optional and it does not come from research. If you have not worked in or adjacent to the industry, the realistic move is to partner with someone who has rather than to try to acquire it quickly.
